Large convoy of machinery for work on the new bridge arrives in Paraguay.

After almost 24 hours of bureaucratic processes, the transport of heavy machinery for the construction of the Brazil-Paraguay Integration Bridge, on the right bank of the Paraná River, continued its journey. The transshipment by road was carried out via Ponte da Amizade, this Wednesday, 4th. This was the first shipment of heavy machinery for the start of the structure's construction site on the Paraguayan side.

The arrival of the train was welcomed with celebration and even fireworks in the municipality of Porto Presidente Franco, a city in Paraguay that shares the construction site with Foz do Iguaçu, in the Porto Meira neighborhood. Financed with resources from the Itaipu plant, on the Brazilian side, the bridge will help to better organize and distribute heavy vehicle traffic between the two countries and will enable an increase in the regional economy, expanding exports and imports between Brazil and Paraguay and, in the future, with other neighboring nations.

Once on Paraguayan soil, the convoy consisted of eight vehicles. Among them, three boards with machines, four dump trucks and a tanker truck.

With the construction site set up in Presidente Franco, the work will soon be integrated into the existing movement on the Brazilian side of the bridge. In Foz do Iguaçu, the bridge began to be built in August. The Itaipu Coordination Board monitors the work step by step, which is managed by the State government.

More agility

This Thursday, the 5th, Brazilian institutions involved in the construction process, in partnership with representatives of institutions representing Paraguay, are preparing the second temporary export procedure, which will guarantee more agility for the continuation of the service.

The crossing of machines and other equipment, while the works last, follows a special customs tax regime, thanks to an agreement between the two countries. The agreement involved a lot of diplomacy, as is usual in the relationship between Brazil and Paraguay.

For Itaipu's Coordination Director, General Luiz Felipe Carbonell, this is another important step to guarantee the work schedule, estimated at three years. “I have no doubt that we will overcome any type of obstacle and deliver this work in record time, which is so important for the regional population of Paraná and Mercosur,” he stated.

For the Brazilian general director of Itaipu, General Joaquim Silva e Luna, “it is important that we always provide the necessary support to prevent expectations from turning into frustration, because this bridge has been claimed by the population of Iguaçu for at least three decades. So far we have been successful and I have no doubt that we will continue on this successful path”, he assured.

Itaipu will fully finance the construction of the Brazil-Paraguay Integration Bridge, at a cost of R$323 million. Another R$140 million will be invested in Perimetral Leste, which will connect the new bridge and BR-277, diverting heavy truck traffic from the tourist and central avenues of Foz do Iguaçu.

The future bridge will be 760 meters long and will be cable-stayed, with a free span of 470 meters, which is one of its aesthetic differences. The cable-stayed connection with the longest free span in the world is the one that connects the Russian mainland to Russky Island. It is 3,100 meters long and has a free span of 1,104 meters. Although smaller, the bridge over the Paraná River will also be impactful and will become the border's new postcard.
